500lb Jib Hoist – I-Beam Design and Structural FEA Analysis

Overview

This project involved the design and analysis of a 500 lb jib hoist using an I-beam section that was available in on-site inventory. My scope included performing structural analysis of the beam under combined loading and delivering a complete engineering drawing package for fabrication.

Issue & Engineering Approach

The primary constraint was the requirement to utilize an existing I-beam section already available on site, limiting flexibility in section selection.

Additionally, because the hoist was designed to swing, the beam was subjected not only to bending from the vertical load, but also torsional loading due to eccentric and rotational effects during operation.

The approach included:

  • Evaluating the existing I-beam section for combined loading conditions

  • Analyzing both bending and torsional effects under swinging operation

  • Using finite element analysis (FEA) to assess stress distribution and deformation

  • Verifying that the selected section met performance requirements within given constraints

Design & Analysis

The structural behavior of the beam was governed by combined loading:

  • Bending from the applied hoist load

  • Torsion introduced by swinging motion and load eccentricity

Asymmetric sections such as I-beams are not well-suited for simplified torsional analysis due to non-uniform stress distribution and warping effects.

To address this, FEA was used to:

  • Capture combined bending and torsional stresses

  • Assess overall deflection and structural performance

  • Confirm adequacy of the beam section under real operating conditions

Outcome

The analysis confirmed that the selected I-beam section could safely support the combined loading conditions within acceptable limits.

A complete fabrication drawing package was developed to support construction using available materials, reducing procurement time and simplifying project execution.
